Bramcote Park
Local Works Studio are working with Assemble to refurbish Bramcote Park; a public park in South Bermondsey, London.
New London Architecture and Southwark Council awarded Local Works Studio and Assemble the project following a design competition in 2022. We developed a creative masterplan with Assemble Play and Webb Yates that prioritises community input, turning a disjointed public park in South Bermondsey into a valuable and welcoming community green space.
The team have been providing opportunities for local people to participate in meetings and workshops, such as forums for the local community to review the brief and share local insights and knowledge.
We are taking a circular economy approach to the design and delivery of Bramcote Park, prioritising methods and materials with the most positive environmental impact. Through inventive, playful reuse, we will retain as much material on site as possible during and after the refurbishment.
Laura Schofield (Landscape Institute & chartered landscape architect) was on the New London Architecture judging panel:
“What stood out for me was the winning team’s combination of a creative and community-centric approach, alongside technical and professional skills including art, play, landscape, and engineering,”
“In their initial concept, they recognised the multi-functional value of green spaces such as sustainable drainage systems, providing biodiversity and play opportunities.”
The concept for Bramcote park is a ‘park of two halves’ comprising a biodiverse and climate resilient ‘forest garden’ and a robust, elegant ‘public square’. The whole site will be made up of a series of distinctive, characterful playable landscapes and the layout is designed to bring children into close contact with trees, and other plants, with interesting foliage, textures, smells and colours.
The North Park is currently under construction, with work on the South park starting soon.
