Plinth sculptures for the Royal Academy Summer Show.
In 2024 we designed and made two plinths for the architecture rooms at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, curated by architecture collective Assemble, exploring ideas around “spaces for making”.
As always, we aimed to do the bare minimum required for functionality, and with light-touch craftsmanship, letting the materials speak for themselves.
More writing and photography about these pieces can be seen at our Substack page: Grounder
We collected waste screed sections and broken concrete bollards from the Phoenix industrial estate in Lewes, East Sussex. A site managed by the developer Human Nature.
Using traditional stone masonry techniques we split the concrete screed into manageable sections, and assembled the fist plinth.
The second plinth was made using 2 concrete bollards and a square of tarmac that was cut from a car park to provide access for a survey.
